I like phpBB2 because its simple, but I like Invision for its power. You can create really customised forums, really neat, and really easy to edit the look and layout.
Edited Title, now the official phpBB2 vs IPB thread. Stickied.

IMO, phpbb is for beginners..and when your website grows, you will want to switch to invision. If you're website is big and you're raising money through it, get vBulletin.

I feel that Invision is actually better, though a lil more complex. phpbb is better if there is only one looking after the forums, feel that invision is better when there is more.

i haven't tried using ipb though. i go for phpbb. it's easy. yes its true that it fits for novices in forum management/administration. i'm now using phpbb. i didn't had the hard time customizing my board. http://dhost.info/nitrosaint/forum

phpbb has more skins and more hacks/mods. But ipb has great features already built in. I also found it easier to create skins. So I voted for ipb.

I always liked IPB till 2.0. 2.0 is a rip-off of the new vBulletin version (think it is 3.1.0 or 3.11).
phpBB2 I never liked. Just not enough features.
Burning Board was a little better.
Right now I am going to test out OpenBB which looks really nice.
vBulletin is the best in my very very honest opinion.

i voted for other. YaBB is my personal favorite. Looks professional (although not 3d-ish), easy to set up, hundreds (if not thousands) of mods for it, and a few other goodies of phpBB and IPB though, i'd pick Invision. my first board was an Aimoo board. When tehy started bombarding me with ads, i switched to Invisionfree. I gave the full invision a try once, was great

YaBB is pretty good.
YaBBSE is now Simple Machines which I have to comment Simple Machines is also a nice piece of software.
I look forward to using it once they develop it a little more.
I think I've heard of Aimoo before. Isn't that something similar to EZBoard and Proboards?

it's kind of like a cross between YaBB and Invision. the control panel is similar to Invisions (exept when you use Aimoo's free service you barely get to do anything), but it looks like YaBB. The downside to Aimoo is that after a while you get bombarded with popup ads, post ads, banner ads, all that crap (and, to make it worse, it's for crap like "Burn a DVD suing your CD burner!!" and "Send your message to anyones desktop!" *hacking tools.....*). If your looking for a free board and host, look no farthur than www.Invisionfree.com

InvisionFree is pretty good, I've done some skinning for it before. They are finally getting really good with the service. Also I recommend www.forumflash.com or www.sebflipper.net. SebFlipper created the script you see on pretty much all IPB hosting sites. Forum Flash allows you access to the forum files if you request it.
