1941 pattern
By 1941 the high loss rate of flying boots was recognised by the Air Ministry.
To remedy the problem, the 1940 pattern flying boots were altered; an ankle
strap was added. No further changes were incorporated.
The ankle strap only marginally helped. To secure the boots to the feet, the
strap had to be pulled rather tight hindering the blood flow and resulting in
cold feet. As the straps weren't particularly comfortable and thus not tightened
by many, boots kept being lost.
