D-type Flying Helmet

Issued from 1942 - after the war.

With action in the Middle East and the Far East, the B- and C-type were too hot. There was a need for a cooler flying helmet. Since the C-type pattern was a good model, they made the D-type helmet after the same pattern. Basically identical to the C-type, it was made of a beige cotton twill with a satin lining. Added to it was a flap to protect the neck against the sun.
A slightly different kind of round rubber moulded cup was used on these helmets.
As in the C-type, there were 2 main models; with and without internal wiring. The first pattern was the model without internal wiring. The wired version did not become available until 1944.

D-type, 1st pattern, without earphones.   D-type, 1st pattern, satin lining, note the neckflap.   D-type, 1st pattern, stamp with Stores Reference Number.
