The armoury is the building in which you can upgrade your troop's defense.

The level of your armoury dictates the level of the research you may undertake, ie with a level 2 armoury you can upgrade any of your troop's defense up to level 2. To upgrade up to level 5 you need a level 5 armoury.

How do upgrades work? Each upgrade level adds a cummulative bonus of 1.5% to both the infantry and cavalry defense of a unit. Here is an explanation of how upgrades would work with a Gaul Phalanx posted by Mon-K on the Travian Forum:

For example, your Gaul Phalanx will have:

40 / 50 without Armory.

40.6 / 50.75 with the Level 1 upgrade.

41.2 / 51.5 with the Level 2 upgrade.

And so on.

Each time an upgrade is completed it is granted instantly to all past and future troops (whether they are in the village or on an attack, returning, training, etc.) These bonuses are especially useful when you have large numbers (100+) of troops.

Each upgrade effects the troop built in the village with the upgraded armoury. These upgrades will not effect the troops trained in other villages or reinforcing troops.

If you choose to demolish your armoury, you will not loose the upgrades to your troops.
