What is a ban?
In MediaWiki a user can get banned indefinately, or for a period of time. A ban allows the user to browse the wiki, but he or she will not be allowed to edit a page on the wiki. A username or an IP address (or range of IP's) can be banned or blocked on MediaWiki.
If your username is banned, you can still browse and edit without using your username, or you can create a new username and browse using the new username. If your IP address is banned, you are out of luck!
Banning process
A MediaWiki sysop or bureaucrat may ban any users or ip address on the wiki.
A user has a chance of getting banned if he or she spams the wiki, posts knowingly false or misleading information, blanks a page, curses often, posts copyrighted material, insults another user, flames another user.
Banning periods
The period of penalty is to be decided by the bureaucrat or sysop that chooses to ban you. MediaWiki default bans you for 2 hours, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, Infinitie. A bureacrat or sysop can also type in custom penalty periods.
New account registration or account reactivation
You can contact the administrator after a period of time and your indefinite ban might be lifted, or he will allow you to create a new user account if he doesn't want to reinstate your account.
Your wish can also get rejected, which will leave you on the outside looking in for an indefinite amount of time!
