Types of Players

A Strategy is a way you play Travian. Every user has his or her own strategy. Different types of players mean different types of strategies. Users can roughly be divided into two groups:

  • Defender: A Defender is usually someone who attacks rarely or never. His main goal is Defense, so he focusses on building defensive units, and trying to maintain a good defensive army to repel any attacks. A Defender is most of the times is a Gaul, and occasionally a Roman.
  • Attacker: An Attacker is someone who raids often, and his main goal is keeping up a good offensive army. Most of the times a Teuton is an Attacker.

Different Strategies

Most users choose a strategy from the beginning of the game, thus setting themselves a long term goal. As a certain type of player you use a certain strategy. Everyone who has played RTS before probably knows Rushing and Booming. Well, the same goes for Travian.

  • Rushing: If you are a Rusher, this means you build up an army as soon as possible. Being a Rusher also means people do not invest as much in their economy as Boomers would.
  • Booming: A Boomer is someone who puts economy before military, and thus expanding his economy before he turns his attention over to building up an army.

These two strategies do not apply for solely Attackers or Defenders. An Attacker can be a Boomer as well as a Defender being a Rusher. What determines this, are mostly your long term goals. A born Attacker who wants to dominate Travian, can choose to boom first, and then build up a powerful army using his powerful economy. The same applies for born Defenders.

Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages of Rushing are clear to most people. Rushing provides you with an army, and you are capable of stealing lots of resources from Boomers, who don't have an army yet. But, there's one big 'but' to Rushing. If you lose your army in the beginning, you have a big problem. Since you've neglected your economy, you're vulnerable to attacks, since your army is gone, and you haven't got any resources to build one. Rushing is, when applied well, a good strategy for mainly Teutons.

The advantages of Booming might be not as useful at first. Booming means you build economy. In other words, you're a lovely sitting duck for any rushers. Since Boomers usually don't have an army (mostly in the beginning of the game), they are an easy prey for those who have. This might scare most people off to become a Boomer, but the biggest advantage is that you can suffer some losses to your army later on, because your powerful economy will make you able to replace losses sooner.
